Science and the one who is looking

Science and spirituality were never opposed. The real boundary falls between measuring and direct experience, and modern brain science keeps arriving at it from the other side.

What this is about

Someone is looking at a red apple. You can measure their brain in every way there is, and you will get firing rates and blood flow. The red they are seeing never shows up in any of the readings.

That gap is the subject here. This page sets out a philosophy written down in the 1930s and 1940s that still sounds strange. Science and spirituality were never in a fight. The page starts with why they look like enemies. Then it finds the boundary, which separates measuring something from experiencing it directly. Then it puts one piece of an old cosmology next to a modern theory of perception, because the 2 describe the same loop. It ends with why the split comes from how a person uses each tool.

You need no physics and no religion to read this. Every term is defined where it first appears.

The problem

Why they look like enemies

The usual story says science and spirituality contradict each other. One asks for evidence and the other asks for faith, so a reader is expected to pick a side.

This philosophy rejects that framing. In its own words, “it is a mistake to look upon science as antispiritual”. It says that science “is a help or hindrance to spirituality according to the use to which it is put”. The same chemistry makes a fertiliser or a bomb. Science is in the same category.

The discourse talks about the wars of its own time in the present tense. It treats scientific work turned to destruction as something already happening. So the claim is not naive.

Science handled properly “can be the expression and fulfillment of the spirit”. Facts about the body and the physical world “can become mediums for the soul to know itself”. There is one condition attached. Those facts have to be “properly fitted into larger spiritual understanding”. Without that frame the same facts teach nothing spiritual.

Foundations

Where the line falls

People put this line between the laboratory and the temple. That is the wrong place. It falls between 2 ways of knowing, and to see where it falls you have to be exact about what a measurement is. So that comes first.

What a measurement actually is

The source never says what a measurement is. Everything in the next 2 sections is this page’s own reasoning.

  • Mass is a property of the rock. It is there whether anyone weighs it or not. The number you write down is something else, and that number is a comparison.
  • A balance scale shows this in the open. The rock goes on one pan and known weights go on the other. The answer is how many of those weights it takes to hold the pans level.
  • A kitchen scale hides the same comparison inside. It reads the squash of a spring, and that spring was set against the same reference kilogram.
  • Age works the same way. A rock is not 400 million years old on its own. That number is a count of half-lives of an isotope inside it, measured against a decay rate someone else established.
  • So a measurement needs 3 parts. The thing being measured, a reference to compare it against, and someone doing the comparing.

The blank spot

Name the 3 parts on the balance scale. The thing being measured is the rock. The reference is the set of known weights. The one doing the comparing is you, watching whether the pans sit level.

Now ask which of the 3 you can find in the answer.

  • The rock is in it. The answer is a fact about the rock, which is the whole point of weighing it.
  • The known weights are in it. The answer counts them, so the reference is right there in the number.
  • You are not in it. Nothing in that number says who watched the pans, or where they stood, or that anyone was there at all.

Change the setup and the same thing happens. Drop a stone into a measuring jug and the answer is the stone’s volume, which is the thing being measured. The marks on the jug are the reference and you read the answer off them. The person reading the jug is still nowhere in the number.

So 2 of the 3 parts end up inside the result. The third never does. Call that third part the standpoint, meaning the place the comparison is made from.

  • A thermometer in a glass of water. The water is measured, the marks on the tube are the reference, and the thermometer does the comparing. Its own temperature is nowhere in the reading.
  • A camera in a room. The room is what it records, and the camera is what does the recording. It is the one object in that room missing from the picture.

The scene below is that argument built as a machine. A probe stands at the centre and turns to face anything on the ring. Point it at a rock, a star or a brain and it returns a reading about that thing. The last step turns on all 3 beams at once, so you can see the place they all leave from.

Why the blank spot moves instead of closing

You can measure the instrument. Weigh the known weights on a second balance scale. Take the thermometer’s temperature with a second thermometer. Photograph the camera with a second camera.

Every one of those works. Each one is also a new measurement with a standpoint of its own. That standpoint is missing from its own result. The blank spot does not close. It moves to the new instrument.

So the claim is not that an instrument is somehow invisible. Point a camera at a mirror and the camera does appear in its own photograph. What the picture shows is the camera as seen from where the mirror is. The picture is still taken from one place, and that place is behind the lens. The camera has turned into one more object being photographed, and the photographing is outside the frame as it always was.

Add probes to the chain below and watch the blank spot step backwards without ever shrinking.

The intellect, and how far it reaches

  • The intellect is the reasoning mind. It compares things and sorts them into kinds. It also works out what follows from what.
  • Duality is the name this philosophy gives to the split between the knower and the known.
  • The intellect only works inside that split. Thinking about something means standing apart from it, which puts the thinker on one side and the thing thought about on the other.
  • The thinker is the side that never shows up. Like the camera, it does not appear among the things it thinks about.
  • That is the same blank spot as before, arrived at by thinking instead of by measuring.

What direct experience is

  • Spiritual experience here means direct knowing. Belief does not count, and neither does a conclusion you reasoned your way to.
  • The text gives its own example, and it is a headache. Give it to 2 people who have both had one and they can compare notes and work out what they share.
  • Someone who has never had one cannot be talked into knowing what it is. “If a person has never experienced a headache, no amount of intellectual explanation will suffice for making him understand what a headache is.”
  • The claim is that spiritual experience works the same way. It “involves more than can be grasped by mere intellect” and “cannot be born of unaided intellect”.
  • The intellect is not useless here. “Intellectual explanation can never be a substitute for spiritual experience”, and “it can at best prepare the ground for it”.

Mysticism is the word for treating direct experience as a way of knowing reality. It is the same thing as spiritual experience above, under the name the text itself uses. The text lists 3 common complaints about it and answers all 3. Mysticism is “often regarded as something anti-intellectual, obscure and confused, or impractical and unconnected with experience”. The reply is that “true mysticism is none of these”.

  • Anti-intellectual means opposed to reason. The text says there is “nothing irrational” in it, because at its best it is “a vision of Reality”. Seeing something directly does not contradict reasoning about it.
  • Obscure and confused means unclear. The text calls it “a form of perception that is absolutely unclouded”, which is the opposite claim.
  • Impractical means it changes nothing in ordinary living. Here the text gives a test you can apply. A real one “can be lived every moment of life and expressed in everyday duties”. An inner state that appears only during meditation, and leaves the rest of a life unchanged, fails that test.

Science found the same blank spot

Neuroscience walked into it from the other direction and gave it a name. David Chalmers called it the hard problem of consciousness in 1995.

  • Go back to the red apple. Science has a method that reaches every step from light hitting the retina to the word “red” leaving the mouth.
  • Not one step in that chain says why there is any seeing going on. A machine could run the whole sequence in the dark.
  • Explaining what the brain does and explaining why any of it feels like something are 2 different jobs. No method in neuroscience even starts on the second.

The shape matches. Every item in that chain is an object out on the ring, and the seeing is at the standpoint. A science built to explain objects reaches every step and not the seeing.

This philosophy drew that line decades before neuroscience had a phrase for it. The agreement does not prove the claim. It does show that working scientists later ran into the same line on their own.

The evidence

The loop that builds the world you live in

This philosophy’s account of how the past traps you matches a theory of perception from the last 20 years on several points.

How perception works

  • The brain is sealed in a dark skull. All it gets is nerve signals with no labels attached. Its problem is to work out what caused them.
  • Predictive processing is the theory that the brain solves this backwards. It predicts the signal before the signal arrives, using a model of the world it already has.
  • The prediction travels down towards the senses. What comes back up is mostly the prediction error, which is the part of the arriving signal the prediction got wrong.
  • Lift a milk carton you believe is full and find it empty. Your arm flies up too far. The brain had already set the muscles for the weight it expected, and the correction only arrived after the lift began.
  • Reading this sentence is the same loop with nothing moving. Your brain predicts the next word from the words so far. When the word is close to the prediction the error is small, reading is fast, and you notice none of this. When the word is wrong for the sentence your eyes stop and go back, and that stumble is the error arriving.
  • What you experience is the corrected prediction, and the raw signal never reaches you.

The 2 ways out of an error

  • An error means the model and the world disagree. The brain works to get rid of that gap, and there are exactly 2 ways to close it.
  • Change the model until it matches the world. That is perception and learning.
  • Change the world until it matches the model. That is action, and active inference is the name for it, mostly from Karl Friston’s work.
  • Reaching for a cup is an example of the second one. The brain predicts the touch and position signals it would be getting if the cup were already in the hand. Those signals are not arriving, so the error is large. The arm moves until they do arrive and the error drops to zero. The prediction comes first and the movement is what makes it true.

Why that means you build your own future

Stretch the same loop over years instead of seconds. A person who deeply expects rejection reads neutral faces as cold. They act guarded. Other people respond coldly to guarded behaviour. The prediction caused the guarded behaviour, and that behaviour produced the cold response.

No mysticism is needed for that. The expectation changes how you act, and the way you act produces the outcome you expected. Those expectations were laid down by your past.

The same loop in this philosophy

  • The stored traces are called sanskaras. The Discourses describe human consciousness as “clouded by the accumulation of various types of impressions”. Those impressions “form an enclosure around the possible field of consciousness”.
  • A sanskara and a prior match on 3 points. Both come from past experience. Both bias perception and action. Both are silent, so you never meet them directly and you meet the world they have already shaped.
  • They part on 2 points. A prior is stored in the brain and ends with the body. A sanskara is stored on the mind and continues past it.
  • The impressions are not passive. They express themselves as desires, and “when a desire gathers sufficient strength, it projects itself into action in order to get fulfilled”. Your accumulated past selects your future.
  • The philosophy goes further than the science on one point. It calls the existence of the finite world “only apparent or imaginary”. The science says only that your experience of the world is built, and stops there.
  • There is much more to sanskaras than this page uses. How they form and how they are worn away is a subject of its own, and it gets its own post later.

The exit matches too

The way out is to stop feeding the loop. Act without wanting the result. An act with no self-serving expectation attached leaves no new impression behind, and it spends an old one.

This instruction is not unique to this philosophy. It appears in 5 older texts, in 2 different forms.

  • Isha Upanishad 2. Do your work here and wish to live a hundred years. Done that way, action does not cling to a person. The Sanskrit is na karma lipyate nare, and lipyate means to smear or to stick. That is the same picture as an impression.
  • Bhagavad Gita 2.47. Radhakrishnan translates it as “to action alone hast thou a right and never at all to its fruits”. The later name for the teaching is nishkama karma, meaning action with no attachment to the result.
  • Anguttara Nikaya 6.63, one of the early collections of the Buddha’s discourses. It puts the mechanism first. The words are “intention, I tell you, is kamma”. Kamma is the Pali spelling of karma. What accumulates is the intention behind an act, so an act without that intention accumulates nothing.
  • The gospel of Matthew, chapter 6. Give in secret and do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. People who give in order to be seen “have received their reward”, which says a return already collected cancels the act.
  • Quran 76:9. “We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.”

The 5 are not saying one thing. The Upanishad and the Gita and the Buddha are describing what binds a person across lives. Matthew and the Quran are describing the motive behind a single act, and both keep the reward and move it from people to God. All 5 agree that an act done for the return is spiritually empty. They part on what happens to the actor afterwards.

Clinical psychology has one move that rhymes with this. The comparison below is this page’s, and it is not a published finding. Exposure therapy makes a person do the exact thing they predict will go badly. Someone who fears lifts rides one and stays in it. The predicted disaster does not arrive, and the prediction has no way to explain that away, so it weakens. Avoiding the lift would have left it untouched. Both say the loop breaks when action stops serving the stored expectation.

There are 2 honest limits. Active inference stays inside one brain and one lifetime, while the impressions continue across bodies. The science also has no destination outside the loop, while this philosophy points at one.

The resolution

Rightly used, science is already spirituality

Whether science and religion cover completely different ground depends on how science is understood. Science that deals only with material advancement “would be said to have nothing of spirituality”. Science “expressed to make the meaning of life clear” is also a branch of spirituality. The comparison is to art, which is spiritual when expressed rightly and material when expressed wrongly.

So the same fact about the body counts as spiritual or not depending on what it is used for. Nothing has to change in the future for that to be true, and the split ends the moment the use changes.

Only one claim here is about the future, and it is about civilisation. It says 3 things about the humanity to come.

  • It “will not ignore science or its practical attainments”.
  • It “shall be ensouled not by dry intellectual doctrines but by living spiritual experience”.
  • “All-sided progress of humanity can be assured only if science and religion proceed hand in hand”.

What follows

One thing, many words

The same discourse makes this move about religions. It treats identification with a creed or a sect as one more way of protecting a separate self. Forms and traditions are “in most cases fetters to the release of infinite life”. They help only while they stay pliant.

So a religion is a category. Categories are made by the intellect, and the intellect works by splitting things apart. Every category is a cut made by the thing doing the cutting. The scene below shows what that costs. One solid casts a rectangle on the wall and a circle on the floor. Both measurements are exact. Neither one is the cylinder.

Give 2 observers one wall each and they will describe different objects. Both are reporting honestly, and neither is holding the cylinder. That is the account of what religions do to each other. It is also the account of what science and spirituality do to each other. Science and spirituality are 2 such shadows. What they are shadows of is reached by the second way of knowing, which is direct experience.

This gives a test you can apply. When someone says science and spirituality conflict, ask which claim is on which side of the boundary. A claim about the measurable world can be checked, and religion has no standing to overrule the measurement. A claim about the one doing the measuring is somewhere no instrument reaches, and science overreaches when it says nothing is there. The observer is not the only such place. Why there is anything at all rather than nothing is another. Take the Galileo case. The church ruled that the earth stands still and the sun moves around it. That is a claim about the physical world, and measurement is the only thing that can settle it.

The short version

  • An error has exactly 2 exits. Update the model, which is learning. Or act until the world fits the model, which is how expectations build the future that proves them.
  • Sanskaras and priors match on 3 points. Both come from past experience. Both bias perception and action. Both are silent, so you meet only the world they have already shaped. They part on where the trace is stored and whether it survives the body.
  • The exit is old and widely shared. It appears in 5 texts, from the Isha Upanishad to the Quran. All 5 agree that an act done for the return is spiritually empty. They part on whether that also frees the person who acted.
  • Science used for making the meaning of life clear is already a branch of spirituality. Science used for material advancement alone is not. The split is in the user.
  • A cylinder casts a rectangle and a circle. Both are exact and neither is the cylinder. Categories work the same way.

Test yourself

Mass is a property of the rock. So why call a measurement a comparison? The property and the number are different things. The rock has its mass whether or not anyone weighs it. The figure you write down says how the rock compares against a reference. A balance scale does that in the open, and a kitchen scale does it through a calibrated spring.

What does it mean that the standpoint never appears in the reading? Whatever you measure from is not among the things measured. A thermometer’s own temperature is not in its reading. A camera is the one object in a room missing from its photograph. Point it at a mirror and it appears, but the new place it shoots from is missing again.

If you can always measure the instrument, what is left of the claim? The blank spot moves rather than closes. Weigh the known weights on a second balance scale and the first blank spot is filled. Someone is now reading that second scale, and they are missing from its result. The claim is that no measurement anywhere contains the one who made it.

What is duality, and why can the intellect not leave it? The split between the knower and the known. Thinking about something means standing apart from it, so the intellect always puts itself on one side and its subject on the other. The side it stands on is the one it can never turn into a subject.

What is a prediction error, and what are the 2 ways to remove one? The part of the arriving signal that the brain’s prediction got wrong. You can change the model until it matches the world, which is perception and learning. Or you can change the world until it matches the model, which is action. The second is called active inference.

How is a sanskara like a prior? Both are traces left by past experience. Both bias what you perceive and what you do next. Neither is available to you directly, so you experience the world they have already shaped. They differ on what the trace is stored on and whether it survives the body.

Science can be a branch of spirituality. Under what condition? When it is used to make the meaning of life clear rather than for material advancement alone. The comparison is to art, which is spiritual when expressed rightly. Scientific facts become useful to the soul only when they are fitted into a larger spiritual understanding.
